The Prince Without a Memory

The little prince lived many years alone in the desert, taking refuge among the wreckage of the old crashed plane. In it, he built his new world, his new kingdom.
His memory is fragile and hazy. He doesn’t know exactly what happened, but he senses that he lost something so immense that his mind chose to forget it in order not to break. Like a shield.
But that shield has cracks, and through them, memories slip in.
From his clothes, he deduced he must be a prince, but he doesn’t remember where his kingdom is. Inside the inner pocket of his coat, he found a pair of old sheets of paper with strange drawings he doesn’t understand, but he treasures them deeply. He carried them close to his heart, so they must have been important. Each night, he studies them and gives them a different meaning, even though he knows it’s dangerous. He might uncover their true meaning, and that terrifies him. After all, they’re relics from a previous life. A life lost. A life his mind chose to forget.
With scraps of old fabric, he made a small puppet shaped like a fox. He speaks to it at night, when the silence grows too big and he fears losing everything all over again.
He crafted himself a crown out of a cardboard box that had a smile printed on it. For a moment, he thought of calling himself The Cardboard King.
His scepter is the dry branch of a tree that no longer exists.
His throne, an old airplane seat. From there, he gives speeches to an invisible audience, as if he were still ruling over his forgotten planet.
He remembers loving someone in his world, but he doesn’t know how to return. He only knows that once, he was happy… and now, he lives among ruins.
“What is essential is invisible to the eye,” he repeats to himself every day. He doesn’t fully understand what it means, but he feels it.
He knows that meaning lives in the things he keeps: in the jewel drawn on his cardboard crown, in his worn-out suit, in his dry scepter, in his cloth fox, and in the strange drawings he did not make.
He knows that if he dares to break the shield of forgetfulness, he might remember the meaning of everything.
But he also knows that would mean remembering what he lost.
And so he wonders:
Is it worth knowing everything again?
Or is it better to keep living in this place where memories fall from the sky like dead stars?
In this kingdom of dust…
